A baby Koala bear that was wounded with 15 gunshots before its hospitalization in the Australia Zoo's Wildlife Hospital, is currently struggling between life and death.
The animal baby Frodo and his mother had been attacked with a shotgun near Kenilworth on Friday night, an incident that the Koala mother did not survive. The two kilogram offspring is now fighting for survival.
One of the responsible zoo staff points out: "At this stage yes, she still has some really significant injuries and is in a pretty bad way. Our biggest worry at the moment is that she may succumb to lead toxicity as some of those pellets are remaining in her intestinal tract and that's the biggest thing we will be watching for in the future".
After two surgery rounds and severe medication treatment for the koala baby's damaged skull and stomach after being ripped apart by 15 bullets, the animal might need to undergo more operations in the future.
Media attention for suffering Frodo all over the country led to high amounts of donations for the koala baby's recovery.
In Australia, individuals who willingly kill a Koala by shooting it must face either two years of imprisonment or a $225,000 fine. The police are engaged in investigations about the incident and ask for public support in form of information.
